"Juan Tomàs nodded gravely. he was the elder, and Kino looked to him for wisdom. "It is hard I know," he said. "We do know that we are cheated from birth to the overcharge on our coffins. But we survive. You have defied not the pearl buyers, but the whole structure, the whole way of life, and I am afraid for you"

The quote means, that Juan is happy for his brother but he is also afraid because people are going to get jealous and try to take his pearl.

Kino and his family got lucky and found a pearl and Kino thinks that he doesn't have to work to achieve his goals and support his family.

How people expect to get money but they don't have a job and they don't care enough to get a job and support a family so they are telling other people that it is their job to help them and support them.

Juan Tomàs and Kino are talking because Kino trusts his brother and his brother is the elder so he has to listen and take his advice sometimes. Juan is giving Kino advice because he doesn't want something bad to happen to his younger brother. Juan wants to protect his brother and make sure that his family is going to be alright. Kino realizes this but thinks nothing bad can happen to his family so he doesn't care because he finally has the opportunity to be rich and to provide for his family. Kino ends up finding out very quickly that he is wrong.
