Dylan Massey
6th Period
“Maybe there is a beast… maybe it's only us.” Pg 125. This is just a little snip of dialogue from Chapter 5. Piggy states something along these lines to Ralph, and he truly believes that the beast might actually be them. As the story progresses, division in the group becomes worse and worse. Ralph and Piggy attempt to strengthen unity, but to no prevail; while Jack waits for his moment to take leadership.
All of this shows that the beast is something to cover up the fact that they are the living embodiment of the beast. That inner savagery begins to rise from the depths of every boy on the island, and controls how they think and act. In the end, these chapters are a good leading point for the ultimate climax of the story.
